Government relations

Keeping track of what the Ohio General Assembly is doing, and more importantly, guiding policy discussions by meeting with key legislators, is part of how Porter Wright’s attorneys help clients manage environmental obligations. Often overlooked, the impact of State legislation on environmental compliance costs can be significant. Over the years, Porter Wright’s Environmental attorneys have drafted key provisions and amendments to Ohio’s environmental laws, public health laws and other legislation, and we have routinely worked to keep costly and unnecessary environmental requirements out of Ohio’s laws.

The ability to provide an integrated approach to government relations that incorporates not only understanding the law as it is currently drafted, but seeing the opportunities to influence legislation to help advance client interests, requires more than just knowing the legislative process. It requires attorneys who understand how the law impacts their clients on a day-to-day basis, and who can develop effective ways to advance the client’s interests at every level of government. Porter Wright has decades of experience in this area.

We also attempt to work collaboratively with a variety of trade associations in addressing new proposals for legislation. We serve as General Counsel to the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council, which serves as the voice of the Ohio chemical manufacturers on legislative matters. We regularly meet with government affairs representatives from state agencies, trade associations and public interest groups in an effort to craft legislation which serves the interests of our clients as well as the public.
