Government Contracts Partner, Washington DC

Porter Wright is seeking an experienced Government Contracts Partner in our Washington, DC Office.

This is a unique opportunity to lead and grow our government contracts practice in a collegial and dynamic environment that values teamwork across offices. Key experience and qualifications should include:

  • Advise clients on all aspects of government contracting, including compliance with federal regulations, bid protests, and contract disputes

International Trade Partner

Porter Wright is seeking an International Trade Partner in any of our nine offices (Chicago, IL; Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati or Dayton, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; Washington, DC; Tampa or Naples, FL).

The ideal partner will be highly entrepreneurial, collegial, and possess at least a small book of business. Key experience and skills should include:

  • Advising U.S. and foreign clients on regulatory requirements of investment in the U.S. and shepherding foreign investors through the U.S. government’s CFIUS review process
  • Advising U.S. and foreign clients on the application of, and compliance with, U.S. Customs and other regulatory requirements related to the import of goods into the U.S.
  • Familiarity with trade preference programs (USMCA, CAFTA, etc.) and application of trade remedies (AD/CVD, Sec. 301, etc.)
  • Advising clients on the rules in the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR), the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and the various sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)
  • Experience communicating with above noted regulators regarding investigations, protests, voluntary disclosures and settlements
  • Trade litigation experience is a plus

Intellectual Property Associate

Porter Wright is seeking a mid- to senior-level Intellectual Property Associate with computer science/electrical engineering background to join our Intellectual Property team in any of our firm offices. Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications is required and technical expertise in computer circuits, multiprocessor design, and/or telecommunications is of particular interest.

Responsibilities include:

  • Interviewing inventors and preparing patent applications
  • Conducting all stages of US and foreign patent prosecution, including ex parte appeals
  • Conducting validity, infringement and freedom to operate studies, including preparing associated legal opinion letters
  • Providing legal counsel on intellectual property matters, with a focus on patent matters and including basic licensing, trademark and copyright matters
  • Opportunities to work on and develop skills in licensing and litigation
  • Collaborating with partners, associates and support staff to ensure effective case management
  • Staying abreast of developments in intellectual property law and contribute to the firm's knowledge base

Qualifications Include:

  • Two to five years of patent prosecution experience
  • JD from an accredited law school
  • Technical background (BS/MS preferred)

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior government affairs strategist and advocate for Porter Wright clients across legislative and executive branches.
  • Produce high-quality written work products, including policy memos, legislative analyses, regulatory comment letters, strategy documents, and client briefing reports.
  • Develop and execute client-specific government affairs strategies that integrate legal, regulatory, and political considerations.
  • Collaborate closely with attorneys and government affairs professionals across the firm's offices (Columbus, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton, Naples, Pittsburgh, Tampa, and Washington, D.C.) to identify cross-practice opportunities and deliver coordinated client service.
  • Actively cultivate new client relationships and business opportunities, including participating in proposal meetings, industry events, and thought leadership.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments across priority sectors, and provide timely, actionable intelligence to clients and firm colleagues.
  • Represent the firm and/or clients at congressional hearings, agency proceedings, coalition meetings, and political events as appropriate.
  • Mentor and support junior government affairs professionals within the practice.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • J.D. or license to practice law is a plus and may expand the scope of client service available to this Principal.
  • Experience within Republican and Democratic environments; this is a bipartisan practice, and the ability to work across the aisle and with diverse clientele is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with sectors including energy, defense, infrastructure, technology, trade, healthcare, financial services, or manufacturing.
  • Experience working in or closely with a law firm, lobbying shop, or integrated government affairs practice.
  • Strong existing network with trade associations, industry coalitions, and political organizations relevant to firm clients.
