Alternative dispute resolution

Porter Wright’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) team combines extensive experience representing clients in arbitrations and mediations with substantial service as  neutral arbitrators and mediators. Operating from these dual perspectives benefits our clients in the following ways:

  • As advocates for our clients: Our lawyers know the many advantages of mediation and arbitration: confidentiality, party-control, speed, simplicity and cost effectiveness. They understand that mediation and arbitration require a different set of problem-solving skills than those used in litigation and can advise clients effectively.
  • As neutrals: Our arbitrators and mediators combine decades of successful problem-solving experience as trial attorneys with extensive training and experience serving as neutrals. Together with their training, experience, insight, knowledge and skill as practitioners, our attorney mediators facilitate dialogue among adversaries and help parties achieve cost-effective, efficient resolutions. Our attorney arbitrators use their experience as advocates to apply effective case management techniques, to fairly and timely assess the discovery disputes, and to reach reasoned awards based on the evidence presented at hearing. We have long-time arbitrators on the panels of American Arbitration Association (AAA), AIDA Reinsurance and Arbitration Society (ARIAS-US) and the Association of Insurance and Reinsurance Run Off Companies (AIRROC).
  • As a source of guidance for our clients: Our mediators and arbitrators serve as an important resource for every attorney in the firm, providing a sounding board for assessing a client’s risk at trial and each party’s exposure. This insight can inform early case assessment, helping to more efficiently reach  a favorable outcome, and  assist in risk assessment as the case advances toward trial.
