Overview
Chess leverages his more than 25 years of experience in the public and private sectors and politics to serve clients in both government relations and litigation.
His federal and state governmental experience includes serving on the transition teams for President Donald Trump, President George W. Bush and two governors. He was counsel to U.S. Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC), advising on taxation, finance, appropriations and budget issues. In private practice he has advised and represented clients on a variety of government relations matters including tariff waivers, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) transfers, economic development projects and governmental grant programs, crafted federal and state legislative, regulatory and political strategy, and advised clients in governmental investigations.
As a litigator, Chess has argued successfully on behalf of clients before district, circuit and probate courts and various regulatory bodies. He has served clients as outside general counsel, advising as to compliance and crafting strategies on a wide range of legal, administrative and operational issues. Chess is particularly proud to have successfully litigated the reopening of one client-business, which had been shut down by a state for violating COVID workplace rules, within days of its shutdown and after only 10 minutes of deliberation.
Chess has also prosecuted criminal cases and aided investigations as a state assistant district attorney. Afterwards, he served as special prosecutor in a double murder trial – which ended when the defendant changed her mind mid-stream and pleaded guilty.
His political experience includes serving as an advisor to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., as Alabama State Director and as Director of Florida Election Day Operations for the Donald Trump for President campaign, and as a member of the George W. Bush Florida Recount Team. Additionally, Chess served as a chief floor whip, a delegate and a credentials committee member for the 2016 Republican National Convention.
