UC women’s alumni group awards thousands in grants in its first year

Porter Wright’s Candi Taggart shared that a new organization formed to help University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Law students has awarded thousands of dollars in grants in its first year of operation.

The UC College of Law Women in Law alumnae group was formed in early 2020. Members include women law school graduates from across the country who make an annual contribution of $1,000. They plan to offer grants each year to support student and faculty programs. Candi is on the group’s first steering committee.

The organization was featured in an article in the Cincinnati Business Courier on Dec. 15, 2020 detailing the nearly $50,000 grants provided in the group’s first year of operations. According to the article, the grants will fund:

• 20 new full-time summer positions for law students in public interest/nonprofit placements and the Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals, plus a year-long fellowship at the Hamilton County Municipal Court Help Center.

• Equipment that allows students to compete in virtual remote competitions as well as related team registrations fees.

• A mentoring program connecting the UC chapter of Black Law Students Association with Hughes High School students.

• Two outreach programs created by the Latino/a Law Student Association benefiting the Latinx community, as well as the Ohio Innocence Project at Cincinnati Law and the Hamilton County Municipal Court Help Center.
