Government & Regulatory Affairs

Sometimes business works best when it works hand-in-hand with local, state and federal governmental entities. Sometimes the fastest way to a favorable legal outcome isn't through the courtroom. And sometimes, being an advocate means rejecting an adversarial approach.

At Porter Wright, our governmental and regulatory affairs attorneys take a broad view of advocacy — a view that includes collaboration and creative governmental problem solving. Whether our clients face challenges resulting from regulatory enactments, want to take advantage of economic incentives or hope to shape legislative policy, we work with them to realize what's possible.

Our team has significant public-sector experience and a strong network of professional contacts. For example, lead partner Scott North led Ohio Governor Strickland's regulatory reform initiative, Advantage Ohio. Attorney John Carney served three terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served in leadership positions on the Insurance, Finance and the Health and Aging Committees, and as an appointee to the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR). And Jim King, head of our government contracts practice, worked in the Pentagon after law school as an Assistant to the General Counsel in the Office of the Secretary of the Army. This collective experience, combined with substantive legal knowledge across industries as diverse as agriculture, manufacturing and technology and a keen understanding of our clients’ business goals, allows us to deliver the results our clients need.
