Porter Wright attorney Whittaker named 2013 Forty Under 40 honoree
Lisa G. Whittaker, an attorney in Porter Wright's Labor and Employment Department, has been named to Columbus Business First's Forty Under 40 Class of 2013. The Forty Under 40 distinction is given to area business executives who demonstrate outstanding business ethics, work for the betterment of the community and possess exemplary leadership skills.
"Lisa is an exemplary attorney and community leader," said Robert "Buzz" Trafford, Porter Wright's managing partner. "She has a real passion for serving others through her legal work and volunteerism with local youth and mentorship of law students. We could not be more proud of Lisa for receiving this great honor."
In its 21st year, the awards honor Central Ohio's best and brightest stars, reviewed and scored on four main criteria including reason for nomination, professional development, awards and recognitions, and community involvement.
Lisa is a labor and employment attorney who focuses in all areas of management-side labor and employment law, helping employers manage the legal issues affecting their workforce. She defends employers in litigation in both state and federal court and before administrative agencies in claims involving allegations of discrimination, wrongful discharge, retaliation, Title VII, whistleblower and public policy violations. She also represents clients in charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission and the Department of Labor.
Lisa advises employers on the full range of employment issues, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and COBRA.
She has helped clients revise and update their employee handbooks and employment policies, handled incident investigations and advised clients regarding last chance agreements, performance improvement plans and severance agreements and releases.
With her background in education and teaching, Lisa is able to bring significant knowledge to help employers effectively educate their managers and supervisors.
Lisa presents at CLE’s and other speaking engagements on records management, and the Ohio Public Records and Open Meetings Acts. She is a frequent writer for the Ohio Employment Law Letter and frequently writes for Porter Wright's Labor and Employment Law blog – Employer Law Report.
She is the chair of the board of trustees for The Ohio State University, Newark Campus and is active with multiple professional associations, including the John Mercer Langston Bar Association (of which she is currently President-Elect), Women Lawyers of Franklin County and the Columbus, Ohio State and American Bar Associations.
