Porter Wright traces its roots to 1846 and its “founding father,” Richard Harrison.

Harrison was born in Thirsk, Yorkshire, England, where he lived until 1832 when his family moved to America to make their home in Springfield, Ohio. When he was “put out” to earn his own keep at the age of 12, Harrison went to work at the Springfield Republic, which at the time was an influential Whig newspaper in the state. Eight years later, Harrison chose the law as his profession.

To become a qualified lawyer during this period, one either “read the law” through an apprenticeship with established attorneys or attended the only place west of the Alleghenies instructing in the practice of law, the Cincinnati Law School.

Richard Harrison received his education by combining both methods of study. In 1844, he began by reading with Judge William A. Rogers, one of the most prominent members of the Springfield legal community. In 1845, he began studying at the Cincinnati Law School from which he graduated six months later.
