We know that our strengths lie in our differences. Diversity encompasses an infinite range of individuals’ unique characteristics and experiences, including people of different races, genders, national origins, ages, religions, sexual preferences or orientations and disabilities. By promoting diversity, we are stronger allies to our clients and our communities. We have seen this diversity build a more dynamic legal profession, a more inviting workplace and richer communities. We take proactive steps to promote inclusiveness, not only within the firm, but within the legal profession as a whole.

Our Diversity Statement, coupled with a Diversity Plan, sets forth six actionable goals to help guide our efforts.
  • Employ effective methods of recruitment of diverse persons
  • Promote full and inclusive participation by our attorneys and support staff in our service to clients
  • Support the success and advancement of members of diverse groups within our firm
  • Include members of diverse groups within our firm in leadership training and opportunities
  • Participate in bar association and community activities that advance diversity in our firm, in the legal profession and in the communities in which we live and work
  • Commit the time and resources necessary to accomplish these objectives

The following are a few of the diversity action steps we have taken:
  • Participation in Minority Clerkship Program: The firm annually participates in the Columbus and Cleveland Bar Association minority clerkship program
  • South Central Ohio Minority Supplier Development Council: Porter Wright actively participates as a corporate member of the South Central Ohio Minority Supplier Development Council. The Council, an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, is dedicated to providing a direct link between minority businesses and its corporate members
  • Minority Law Student Outreach: In 2008, we initiated an outreach program to minority students from The Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law and Capital University Law School to promote firm diversity efforts. The program involves a series of events that are focused on issues of professional development and diversity in the practice of law and address topics such as interviewing, workplace impression management, professionalism and goal-setting as well as panel discussions regarding diversity in the practice of law
  • Receptions: The firm hosted a reception sponsored by the John Mercer Langston Bar Association and the Asian-Pacific American Bar Association to provide educational and networking opportunities for all minority summer associates working in Columbus, Ohio
  • Diversity Training: Diversity training is a standard part of our associate orientation program and is offered to other firm personnel on a regular basis
  • Mentoring Program: Our mentoring program, which includes all associates, is designed to help associates lean about our culture, history, practices, and procedures; introduce newly hired associates to senior partners; provide programming for associates to enhance their understanding of business concepts; business development; client relations; and client satisfaction; and ensure that associates have the opportunities to perform significant work assignments
