EmployerLawReport Blog: Mr. Van Vlerah helps employers to manage the legal risks presented by workplace injuries. From defending intentional tort claims to addressing alleged violations of specific safety rules to representing employers before the Industrial Commission and the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, he works closely with clients to obtain favorable workers’ compensation results. His workers’ compensation practice spans a number of industries, and he routinely advances employer interests in hearings to determine, for example, injury or disease allowance, wage loss, voluntary abandonment, and permanent total disability. In addition to his work before administrative agencies, Mr. Van Vlerah also represents employers in workers’ compensation appeals to Ohio state courts and has helped to obtain two directed verdicts for employers and submitted appellate briefs to the Ohio Supreme Court.
Mr. Van Vlerah also represents employers involved in employment litigation. In addition to defending companies against claims of race, sex, disability, and age discrimination, he helps employers to counter employee claims for breach of contract, promissory estoppel, and public policy wrongful discharge, among others. Mr. Van Vlerah also counsels employers regarding their treatment of employees whose claims implicate not only Ohio’s workers’ compensation laws but also state and federal disability discrimination statutes and the Family and Medical Leave Act.
